What Is FeRAM (FRAM)

1. Definition
FeRAM (ferroelectric RAM, often branded FRAM) is a non-volatile memory that stores data in the polarization state of a ferroelectric material. Unlike SDRAM, it keeps contents when power is removed. Unlike many NOR Flash parts, it can be written at bus speed with very high write endurance and low energy per write — which is why meter, industrial, and sensor designs still specify it.

2. FeRAM vs EEPROM vs Flash
EEPROM is non-volatile but slow to write and limited in cycle life for log-style updates. NOR/NAND Flash offers density and cost at scale but needs erase blocks and is a poor fit for frequent small writes. FeRAM sits in the middle for many embedded BOMs: byte- or page-oriented access, fast write, endurance suited to event counters, calibration data, and status flags — typically on I2C or SPI, in SOP/SON packages from 4 Kbit up to 2 Mbit class devices.

3. Typical applications
You will see FeRAM on bills of materials for smart meters and energy monitoring, industrial controllers and data loggers, RFID and asset tags, and battery-powered IoT where the MCU must log often without wearing out external Flash.
